Stow Lake

"The coldest winter I ever saw was the summer I spent in San Francisco."- Mark Twain

San Francisco is normally freezing. Not Middle America freezing, but a chill you to the bone take no mercy freezing. So when the city reached a mind blowing ninety-seven degrees, we decided to go play outside. Since Golden Gate Park is practically my neighbor I have an endless supply of outdoor fun to explore. Stow Lake was a perfect choice for such a hot day.

Stow Lake is located in the eastern-center of the three and a half mile park. Now, I've lived by Golden Gate Park for about two years and I had never seen this lake nor had I known of its existence. That is one of the things I love most about San Francisco, you never know what you will find next. The lake is basically one large circle with a large "island" located in the middle called Strawberry Hill. This set up is perfect for the paddle-boat rental that we embarked upon.

Now, I'm not the most athletic of people. So when being unceremoniously "launched" or better yet, "kicked" off of the dock, I was a little skeptical that I could make it around the whole of the lake. After the first couple of minutes however, the burning in my thigh muscles ceased and I was able to marvel at the good fortune of finding Stow Lake. Since paddle-boats and canoes are the only modes of transportation allowed on the lake, the water was calm and easy to maneuver in. It only took about a half hour to make it around the lake, including stops.

Here is a list of sights I was able to enjoy on this beautiful day:

  1. Ducklings
  2. Two beautiful cobble bridges to allow access onto Strawberry Hill
  3. A large waterfall
  4. A Chinese Gazebo

Stow Lake is a perfect place for:

  1. A Date
  2. A Picnic
  3. A Hike
  4. A Bike Ride
  5. People Watching

I also love San Francisco. I love going on the Golder Gate Bidge and seeing Alcatraz. But you forgot eating Sourdough bread! Yum. That is my favorite part of San Francisco!

Tyler,

I think I take Sourdough for granted. I seem to always forget how fortunate we are to have it! Thanks for the reminder!

What a great and complex city this is. I worked for a travel guidebook company while living in SF and had never even heard of Stow Lake. Nice find.

I would love to go to SF this fall and watch the Seahawks vs. 49ers game. It has been too long since my last visit.
